Ecchi Anime Subgenre

What is Ecchi Anime?

Of slight relation to the hentai subgenre, ecchi is a loanword that has come to mean any anime series that is heavy on fanservice and sexual tones. The distinction between hentai and ecchi comes down to ecchi being more playful fanservice, always skirting the edge between what's okay to air and what needs to be censored. At the most it's softcore porn, at the least it's simply suggestive.

Thanks to this general definition, it's fairly easy to identify an ecchi anime. All it needs to have is a focus on sexual themes or general sexual humour. The degree of this varies with series, but when you see it, you'll know.

Ecchi Characteristics

Boobs aplenty. If the breasts of characters you're seeing borders on the size of a planet, chances are you are watching something ecchi. It's either the entire cast that has enough to feed a small country or the one character with J-cups, but either way these characters are the start and end of all boob-related shenanigans. Often includes random bouncing or airbag moments.

Mysterious light beams. Sometimes ecchi goes beyond boob bouncing and panty flashing – sometimes it includes actual nudity. Except, because of content restrictions or smart sales tactics, the nudity is concealed behind a sudden beam of light. Not much of a problem for anime released to DVD or Blu-Ray, but certainly a thing for TV series.

Everyone is girls. Well, not the main character or a friend or two, but if the majority of the cast is women, expect it to involve a few playful situations with the cast. Of course, anime in general is packed with mostly female casts, but if it's one guy in the midst of a whole lot of girls, you can see what's coming.

Mild protagonist. More of a staple of the harem genre, ecchi nevertheless likes its mild, nice guy main characters. Paired with comedy, it allows the protagonist to ~accidentally~ slip into sexual situations, and paired with the harem genre, it allows the audience to self-insert.

Related Anime Sub-Genres

Harem. More girls equals more good for ecchi series. Why, the inclusion of an extra girl in the series increases ecchi potential by two times! Including more and more girls to fawn over the protagonist simply creates better and better chances for ecchi gold.

Romance. When harem anime isn't about endlessly teasing the clueless protagonist, sometimes it's about love. As said above, more girls makes things better, so it can also be about a love triangle.

Comedy. Innuendo and sexual scenes are more often than not played off as jokes. Comedy and ecchi are almost hand-in-hand because of this, and also because ecchi usually doesn't have a firm plot in mind.

Seinen. The majority of ecchi focuses on drawing in the male market, and so seinen gets a mention as a very related subgenre. There are, of course, ecchi shows for women, but the majority of what we see every year is undoubtedly meant for guys.

Fantasy. Not that kind of fantasy. A surprising number of ecchi series include fantasy elements, from entirely new worlds to something a bit magical in an otherwise ordinary setting.

You won't like Ecchi if you…

  • Don't like sexual jokes that are a bit on-the-nose.
  • Would rather watch a series that focuses more on story.
  • Find the modern shiny art style look a little too boring or sameface.
  • Can't understand over-the-top chaotic stories that don't make much sense.
  • Would rather just watch hentai to get the job done.

Here's our top 10 'best Ecchi recommendations'

    1. Mysterious Girlfriend X – Mikoto Urabe is not your usual high school girl; she sleeps in class, laughs at random things and always carries around a pair of scissors. 2. In Solitude, Where We Are Least Alone – After the death of their parents, Haruka and twin sister Sora move to the countryside. There they live in a peaceful town, but the more time they spend there, the more Haruka remembers his younger days. 3. Dirty Pair – Keu and Yuri are known as codename "Lovely Angels", but really, they are the space police's "Dirty Pair". The two may be mercenaries who have never left a problem unsolved, but you can bet that there will only be destruction in the process. An older sci-fi series with plenty of classic-style comedy.

    4. B-Cupped Pervert – Yamada might be 15, but her thoughts are very much 18+. Because of anxiety over how she looks, she plans to have sex with 100 guys, but due to her not knowing the first thing about dating, sets her sights on classmate Kosuda to ease her in. A reverse-role ecchi romcom that doesn't force the point.

    5. Golden Boy – Before graduating from Law at Tokyo University, Kintarou drops out and decides to travel across Japan. On his way, he picks up a number of jobs, always working earnestly hard while never staying too long to get attached. A loveable ecchi series with crude jokes but an honest heart.

    6. Sankarea – Furuya has a bit of a zombie fetish. In fact, after his cat dies, he plans to revive it with a special potion. But when his potion is taken by a girl from his school, who downs it in a hurry, Furuya needs to deal with a zombie whose lust for him makes her want to eat him. An ecchi anime that mixes horror and romance very well.

    7. Demon King Daimao – Akuto Sai has exceptional magic power. In fact, he's so powerful that it's almost no surprise that he's destined to be the next demon king. What is a surprise are all the girls who flock to him, ready to fawn over him at a moment's notice. A fantasy harem series that is fun to sit back and watch.

    8. Everyday Life with Monster Girls – Kimihito, a mild Japanese man who is almost never referred to by name, is a host to three monster girls staying in the country for cultural exchange. Except… all the girls love him to death and will go painfully out of their way to show him. Not to mention that the number of monster girls wanting to stay at his home just keeps increasing… A fun comedy anime that is all about ecchi situations with monster girls.

    9. Elfen Lied – In this world, there are things known as Diclonius, humanoid beings with telekinetic powers. One such being, Lucy, escapes confinement and plunges into the sea, waking up to find herself taken in by two teens. Unfortunately, Lucy is psychotic at best and murderous at worst. A strongly violent ecchi series that quickly develops into a harem.

    10. Abnormal Physiology Seminar (TV) Nanako has a crush on a guy in college, and enrolls in a class just to be closer to him. Except she finds herself in a class dedicated to analyzing fetishes. What's more, everyone is a complete pervert who is into something a little out of the ordinary. A short ecchi anime that borders on hot and gross.
