Hentai Anime

What is Hentai Anime?

Hentai is a term you've likely come across when looking up practically anything to do with anime. Borrowed from the Japanese word for "perverted sexual desire", the hentai subgenre has come to mean any anime or manga that features lots of nudity, sex and/or erotic content. It's basically an English loanword given to anime with porn in it.

Hentai differs from ecchi in that hentai anime gets right to the point, while ecchi anime skirts around it and never quite gets beyond playful fanservice. Since hentai anime is restricted content, it's kept to OVAs: short, straight-to-DVD anime that doesn't often become a series.

Hentai Characteristics

All about porn. While some series can incorporate fantasy elements or focus on character development for a while, the hentai subgenre by definition always comes back to porn.

The invisible protagonist. Often a characteristic of games more than anime, hentai often makes use of camera angles and art techniques to shift the action into a point of view mode where the protagonist is largely not visible. You can make a guess as to why that's done.

Exaggerations. As with non-cartoon porn, everything in hentai tends to be larger than life, bordering on the unbelievable. Artistic license and being a cartoon simply allows hentai to dream a little bigger.

Crossing the line. Hentai is already too much for TV, so since it's going straight to for-home releases, it can do whatever it wants. Mostly. Hentai's the genre of anime where anything you can imagine happens and where certain aspects banned in other series get the spotlight.

Related Anime Sub-Genres

Yuri. When girl meets girl, sometimes it results in a short but cute anime about holding hands, going on first dates and getting confused about feelings. Paired with hentai anime, it's a bit more involved.

Yaoi. Like with yuri, yaoi anime is often about the strong feelings of friendship, rivalry and love between two men. Hentai simply takes it even further.

Ecchi. Hentai's less serious related subgenre, ecchi is all about pushing boundaries when it comes to playful fanservice and sexual scenes. On the lesser end, ecchi features lots of panty shots and playful innuendo; on the borderline hentai end, ecchi anime can be everything but explicitly showing nudity or sex.

Romance. Don't look to hentai for your fill of romance, but the subgenre does have its tender moments, if only very rare and far between works.

You won't like Hentai if you…

  • Don't like overtly adult content.
  • Need substantial story in your anime.
  • Might be arrested just for owning it in your country.
  • Have an aversion to tentacles.
  • Feel that ecchi already pushes boundaries.

Here's our top 10 'best Hentai recommendations'

    1. Cream Lemon – An old but lengthy series where a range of characters in a range of settings engage in a range of activities. The art style is very dated but the series has an incredibly wide range of stories.

    2. Boku no Pico – An inescapable hentai recommendation that features an age gap couple who start up a pretty believable relationship and struggle with what it means to be together like they are.

    3. Bible Black – High school boy Minase finds a book of magic that bestows upon its owner potent seductive powers. Being the kind of guy that he is, Minase makes use of this right away but little does he know that much more evil is happening behind the scenes. A hentai series with strong supernatural elements.

    4. Shoujo Sect – Shinobu is a ladykiller and, despite being in an all-girls school, is constantly surrounded by adoring girls. But while she indulges the girls with what they want, Shinobu pines for her childhood love: a girl who has forgotten the promise they made long ago.

    5. Tokineiro (A Time to Screw) – A bored, cynical man named Setsuya lives in a mansion with four maids. There they enjoy a number of activities as the days pass. An anime where the dub vastly improves the subbed version.
